Sperm Donation
Sperm Donation
How does it work?
Donating sperm in fertility treatment refers to sperm which has been gifted by an eligible male.Pregnancy using donor sperm can be achieved by using either in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment in our specialist laboratory or by intrauterine insemination (IUI), where sperm is injected directly into the woman’s uterus.
Is it right for you?You may need donated sperm if:
- You are a single woman or part of a female same-sex couple
- If your male partner is a carrier for a genetic abnormality that could be inherited
- If your male partner had cancer treatment, a vasectomy, injury or is not producing his own sperm
- If you have had repeated failed ICSI/TESE cycles due to suboptimal sperm quality
What next?
In-OVO Fertility Clinic only uses sperm from non-anonymous donors and source the donor sperm from a sperm bank in Denmark:• Cryos International Sperm Bank www.cryosinternational.com
This means that the patient can choose the male who will be donating sperm and will not need to wait until donations become available.
If patients are thinking about purchasing sperm, they must ensure that the donor sperm complies with UK law. Patients should discuss their treatment options with the Consultant and then contact our embryologist through donorenquiries@in-ovo.co.uk
A change in the law for treatment involving donating sperm and eggs, in 2005, states that any child born as a result of treatment with donor sperm has the right to access information held about that donor through the HFEA. In most circumstances, the child cannot access this information until the ages of 16 and 18, however, there are exceptions linked with serious health issues.
Our embryologist will liaise with the sperm bank when it comes to approving the man who is donating sperm and organising the shipping of the sample(s). Once the sperm is in our laboratory, you can then proceed to the next step of treatment which is usually IUI or IVF.
We also understand that making the choice to use donor sperm can be difficult and that there can be psychological implications for all those involved.
At In-OVO Fertility Clinic, we ensure that all parties receive the appropriate counselling before treatment is undertaken. Our counselling service is independent, run by an experienced fertility professional and gives the patient the opportunity to discuss any concerns linked with treatment. Please note that, for patients receiving donor gametes or embryos who are unmarried or not in a civil partnership, it is important to ensure that the legal parenthood of both parties is properly established. The HFEA has produced a comprehensive and easy-to-follow guide that you can download here.
